Make Your List, Check it Twice

Here’s a checklist from Consumer Reports MoneyAdvisor about better ways to organize our financial life in the month of December:

Review your portfolio–You might want to take investment losses to offset capital gains or apply against you income.

Begin Financial Aid Process–Go ahead and gather any documentation you might need for your kids to fill out financial aid applications, like the FAFSA, which should be submitted as soon as possible after January 1.

Seasonal Sales–Now is the time to take advantage of sales on items like bikes, grills and electronics.

Rebates–File rebate applications for holiday gifts you’ve purchased.  Also, make a copy in case something goes wrong or it gets rejected.

Family Finances–Have a discussion with your adult children about your finances and make sure they have necessary information about your medical and legal matters too.
